What is the difference between psychotherapy and coaching?
You may be asking yourself if you would need to work with a therapist or a coach? Sometimes it is difficult to understand the differences between the two and we are here to help clarify any questions or concerns you may have and to help you make the best choice.
Both a therapist and a coach work to help you reach the goals you have set for yourself but may do so with different techniques. Both collaborate with you on what you feel you want those goals to be.
Therapists go through many years of gaining knowledge and experience by attending state mandatory education, acquiring internship hours, and sitting for a state board testing. Psychotherapy is regulated by state boards. So as therapists in California, we are licensed to provide psychotherapy to residents within the state of California by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences.
Currently, in most states, coaching is not regulated by state boards. Therefore, we can provide coaching to residents in any of the United States, not just California. Coaching sessions are provided online via Skype or FaceTime with a combination of phone calls, email, and text messaging available also. Coaching sessions are set up to be convenient to your location and your schedule.
Beyond licensing laws or if you live within or outside of California, how can you decide which is the best fit for you?
Coaching – First off we will help you identify your goal for coaching. Your life goals. We will then help you identify obstacles in the way of you achieving your goals, help you create a plan for change, and encourage you to maintain the motivation needed to make the change you want in your life. As trained psychotherapists we will be able to monitor your emotions and reactions to make sure coaching continues to be the best fit. If not we will help you find resources in your area.
Therapy – We will help you look at the underlying issue of what is causing you to feel bad emotionally and therefore interfering with your ability to function. As trained therapist we are able to help you process through feelings of anxiety or depression, traumatic memories, and explore defense mechanisms that may be interfering.
